Our definitions are intended to give our readers basic understanding
of the terms in our Glossary. Some national and industry standards, or
customer specifications, may have specific definitions of certain terms
that might be different from their common usage - in which case the
terms should be interpreted in the context of the relevant standards, or
specifications, being referenced to.
Y-axis - the vertical plane, or ordinate, in the Cartesian coordinate system.
Yield point - the point whereby a metal ceases to be elastic and starts to develop
Young's modulus - the tangent modulus of the initial, linear portion of a
stress-strain curve determined from tensile tests; a measure of the stiffness of an
elastic material; the ratio of tensile stress over tensile strain in the elastic portion
of the stress-strain curve.
